Dr Monira Hoque: Suicide bombs have killed at least 41 people and wounded 70
people, attending Friday prayers at the Imam Bargah Mosque. This attack comes
just a week after a suicide attack on Shiite worshippers in the northern city
of Kunduz. This previous attack was claimed by the self-proclaimed Islamic
State.
Fifteen ambulance vehicles were seen rushing to and from the
massacre. The local hospital voices that the number of deaths and casualties
has been overwhelming and they are expecting more in the coming months.
Experts say that these attacks are a sign of challenging the
Taliban rule over Afghanistan. Although Taliban has its own history of Shiite
persecution, this new Taliban-led administration has proclaimed to stabilise
the country and protect the minority Shiites.
Security of Imam Bargah has since been handed over to
Taliban authorities, from the local Shiite community.
