France has closed 63 mosques and Islamic schools as part of its fight against extremist Islam, said Gerald Durman, the country’s interior minister.
Campaigns are underway across France following French President Emmanuel Macro’s announcement of a fight against Islamist separatism.
At a news conference, the French interior minister confirmed that nine shops in the Herald region, including a mosque and school, had been closed.
He also said that hundreds of foreign nationals would be deported from France, adding that 231 foreigners living in France would be deported, including 180 prisoners.
The announcement comes amid ongoing tensions between the Muslim community living in France and the country’s government over various issues.
Earlier, French President Nicolas Sarkozy had said that Islam was in “crisis”.
Macro added that the government would take strict measures to control various schools and religious institutions in the country by controlling the foreign funding of mosques.
Macro also confirmed legislation to control Muslims in France.
